The Word This Week

Luke 24:1…

There were two bookend events in the three days between Jesus’ crucifixion and His resurrection.

The first was the astounding event which took place in the Temple, when the massive 75 foot tall 9-inch- thick veil which separated the Holy Place from the most Holy Place was torn from top to bottom.

The second event was the empty tomb.

The first event signaled religion was dead. The second event signaled eternal relationship with The Lord Jesus Christ was alive!

Friday, the priests serving in the Temple had been astounded. Sunday, those who arrived at Jesus’ tomb were astounded. In each case, the initial reaction was shock and dismay.

We can imagine the priests immediately made plans to make repairs to the Temple veil, so that the dead religion could continue. They had been instructed no one could enter the Most Holy Place but the High Priest - and that could only be on one day each year – the Day of Atonement. Can you imagine their faces as they were now staring right into the Most Holy Place, which God had said would cause the death of anyone who gazed upon those things found there?

Sunday morning what had been sealed – the tomb containing the dead body of Jesus – was now open for viewing as well. It was unexpected, to say the least. Even by His own followers.

Religion, which had been alive was now dead. Forever.

The Lord Jesus Christ, Who had been dead, was now alive. Forever.

No attempts to sew up the veil could change the fact religion was dead.

No attempts to re-seal the tomb could change the fact Jesus was alive.
